This site is the home for all things connected to Malik-16.
With books under his name in multiple genres, from self-help, music, poetry to young adult, graphic novels and now a debut children’s picture book inspired from the Rakim song that made him want to rap, it’s safe to say, Malik-16 is Google-able.
HOST AND EVENT
Malik-16 co-founded Plates & Crates in the year 2013 after creating the concept of curating an event series pairing a nighttime brunch with a live cover band performance of classic Hip-Hop. This was at a time before this kind of entertainment was welcomed with open arms. With a rotating cast of players, Plates & Crates has managed to travel from Harlem to Atlanta to Oakland, inspiring derivative events. While on hiatus from the live event scene, Malik has been working behind the scenes to transition Plates & Crates to new media and festival platforms, still lending his curating skills to any interested event promoters looking for fresh ideas or looking to collaborate.
HIP-HOP HISTORIAN, MUSIC & CULTURE EXPERT
Malik-16 developed a reliably solid but user-friendly ranking system for reviewing Hip-Hop albums in 2018 based upon a list he made with his rap crew back in the 2007 studio space they operated out of. Malik coined this system The Rap Ruler, affectionately referred to as the 16 scale or the “I Used To Love H. E.R.” Scale. In his YouTube series, F A Rap Critic, Malik provides detailed breakdowns of classic albums using the system, inviting a global audience to follow suit to give voice to the masses to counter long-standing journalism influences and promote critical thinking and accountability within Hip-Hop. Did we mention that he literally wrote the book on rap reviews?
SPEAKER, EDUCATOR AND PANELIST
Malik-16 avails himself as a speaker and panelist whenever possible, conducting workshops and presentations, as well as offering opinion and consulting from his experience in the worlds of entertainment, clinical and youth development. As the chair of the Hip-Hop branch of the Virginia Children’s Book Festival, 16 leads interactive multiple-day panels with graduating high school seniors marrying the worlds of literature and Hip-Hop through creative group projects emphasizing analysis and expression. 16 is currently working to expand his work with younger groups of children.
